In Genesis our ability to understand each other's language is broken on the masonry of the Tower of Babel. How high and powerful those builders must have been to threaten the Heavens themselves, to all speak one language and be understood. Today language is a division, a separation. Yet one of the great human capabilities remains our ability to understand one another and to make ourselves understood.Chomsky's Language Acquisition Device tells us that we are made to speak, to understand and be understood. The twists and ties in our neurological frameworks grip onto the sounds of human speech from infancy, making us... human.

This section of Diversity Studies is about understanding, and language is a big part of that. Language however can be loosely defined to cover verbal and non-verbal speech, writing and reading. I am looking for anything on first and second language acquisition in any kind of setting.

Understanding is also about education and education often means schooling. Whorf, Vygotsky, Bateson and so many others have seen that how we talk and how we are taught to speak are itnegral parts of our thinking and knowing. Language is learned in schools and so I am also looking for anything on schooling from early childhood to early adulthood.

Diversity Studies to me is about diversity and it is about inclusion. As an editor I am going to make an effort to meet both of those goals. If you have something you feel needs to be said about any of the above topics let me know about it and we'll try to get it in.
