Remembrance

A kaleidoscope of memories
Poignant patterns of our lives
Play across a palette of emotions...
Haunting my heart.
Once again
We are in youth's yesterday
Sharing tender green years
Of heartache and happiness.
We smiled once, to think someday we'd be
"Old ladies!"
Laughingly spoke of the fun, yet to be...
One Valentine's Day, she gave me a small
Crocheted heart
Sweet symbol of love.. friendship.
But softly veiled, time brought growth and change
Friendship waned like autumn
Submissive to winter's deep freeze.
I saw her last, at her son's wake
We hugged...
Tears of grief intermingling...
Could heartbreak our friendship renew?
But our hearts stayed frozen...
Memories are left, dear sister...
And a small crocheted heart
To warm my own.
