Domestic Violence Isn't Only a Straight Problem

If you are a lesbian or a gay man who has felt controlled, humiliated, degraded, threatened or scared by a lover, ex-lover, domestic partner, spouse or roommate you may be the victim of domestic abuse.

Emotional Abuse is
- constant criticism or humiliation
- blame for things that are not your fault
- obsessive jealousy
- you are lied to, manipulated, punished, and threatened, especially if you are trying to leave the relationship

Physical Abuse is
- pushing, slapping, kicking, biting, restraining, use of a weapon against you or objects thrown at you
- any unwanted action that causes you bodily injury or pain is physical abuse

Isolation is
- you are prevented from seeing your family or friends
- your partner or lover is very jealous of anyone else in your life

Sexual Abuse is
- you are forced or coerced to have sex
- you are humiliated sexually or hurt without your consent
- your partner refuses to practice safe sex

Threats are
- your family, friends, pets of property are threatened

Property Destruction is
- frightening you by smashing objects of destroying things
- damaging or stealing things that you value

Economic Abuse is
- your control over economic factors in your life is threatened

If you are a victim/survivor:

* you are not to blame for another person's act of violence
* you have the right to a safe, healthy relationship
* you deserve to be treated with respect
* you are not alone. There is support available

* make a safety plan in case you need to leave quickly
* establish contacts with friends and family so you have a place to go in an emergency
* consider obtaining a Protective Order to protect yourself
