Definition of Emotional Child Abuse

Emotional abuse is the chronic attitude and acts of a caretaker which involve verbal and non-verbal violence toward a child, sending the child a message that he/she is bad.

Examples of verbal abuse are belittling or name-calling. Examples of non-verbal abuse are withholding love and affection and treating the child differently than other children in the family.
