Russia

In 1999, Russia's ailing population took its largest drop since the fall of the Soviet Union.

The surplus of deaths over births is staggering.

Some of the causes are thought to be the heavy consumption of alcohol, air and water pollution by the government, high levels of depression and the shortcomings of the Russian health care system.

There is a fear among government authorities that there be serious consequences for the Russian economy and its position in the world if this trend persists.
